Aesop's Fables
Beautifully painted scenes from Ęsop's 2500 year old fables adorn the walls of the spectacular octagonal drawing room in Castell Coch, a Victorian fantasy castle in South Wales.
Owned by CADW (Welsh Historical Monuments), it is open to the public and well worth a visit. The interior decoration throughout the castle is a riot of colourful eccentricity, fabulous workmanship and Victorian fantasy. The artist was William Morris' contemporary William Burgess.
Beth Russell offers us the Hare & Tortoise competing in their famous race and the Quack Doctor extolling the virtues of his medicine which does nothing for his own appearance! 'Butterflies' is taken from the detail of a mural surrounding the drawing room. The design of monkeys and squirrels climbing through pomegranate trees and vines adorns the domed ceiling panels in Lady Bute's highly decorated bedroom. |
