Thread Bear Programme for Autumn to Winter 2010
(with apologies for some of the odd layout - beyond our control !)
Come and join our friendly groups, learn new skills and have lots of fun!
Welcome to Thread Bear for another hugely enjoyable series of classes and workshops, this term with autumnal overtones, and of course plenty of Christmas projects! We've a jam-packed term ahead, with something for everyone.
If you would like to sign up for classes or a workshop, you can either book these directly in the shop, or contact us by phone, mail or email. Payment is required at the time of booking to ensure your place. If you want to book by post, please state clearly which class(es) you wish to book, and forward your letter to us together with your payment. If the class is already fully booked, then we will notify you immediately and you will have the option of transferring to another available class or we will return your payment.
If you have difficulty paying a full fee in one go, particularly for the longer series of classes, please do speak to Kate or Steph and we would be happy to come to a helpful arrangement for you.
We do not routinely confirm bookings, but if you need to bring anything to the class, we will contact you by telephone or post to provide you with a ’bring list’.
Refunds or class transfers can only be made if at least 15 days’ notice is given. If we need to cancel a class for any reason whatsoever, we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible, and a full refund or class credit will be given.
We provide refreshments during all classes, and lunch is provided for whole-day workshops. If you have any special dietary requirements, please could you let us know when you arrive on the day so that we can cater for these.

The extremely popular bobbin lace workshops are for students at all levels and are arranged as general workshops where students work to their own individual programme, under Sharon’s expert guidance. Beginners progress quickly, producing beautiful lace edgings and pictures within a few weeks

Embellished Tote Bag
A beautiful, and capacious handbag, complete with lining, inner pockets (one with zip), long strap and magnetic snap closure. On this two-day workshop you will make the bag in its entirety and also add beautiful embroidered embellishments of your choice … a work of art of appeal to stitchers and quilters alike.

Sock Mad! (1-Day Workshop)
Tutor Heather Esswood
Sat 9 Oct, 10 am - 4 pm. Cost:£35 (including lunch)
With the most beautiful sock yarns ever invented currently in fashion, we’re sock-knitting mad … and what better form of madness could there be? There are few things more satisfying than home-made socks, both to knit and wear. Heather will take you through turning that heel and shaping that toe - all you need to knit a pair of socks from start to finish! .
Experience - just basic knitting skills
Materials - we can provide a kit of self-patterning yarn and needles on the day for a discounted price of £6.50 - or if you prefer to choose your own, you’ll need one ball of 4-ply sock yarn and a set of 2.5 mm or 2.75 mm double-ended needles
Crochet For Beginners (1-Day Workshop)

Sat 11 Dec, 10 am - 4 pm. Cost:£35 (including lunch)
Crochet is enjoying a huge revival once more, and offers huge scope for trendy winter garments, scarves and hats as well as throws and home accessories. You’ll learn all the basic stitches as well as how to follow a pattern, giving you all the required skills.
Experience - absolutely none required. Please do note this is a class for complete beginners and as such will not be appropriate for those who want to move on from basic crochet. If this is you, then keep an eye out for our ‘Fun With Crochet’ class next term
Materials - just bring a 4 mm crochet hook. Yarn provided
Tuscan Tile Quilt (for Beginners) (3-Week Course)

Mon evenings 7-9 pm, Sep - 4 Oct, 10 am - 4 pm. Cost:£34
A flavour of Tuscany comes through in this Tuscan Tile Quilt, with the fabrics Kate has used coming from the Italian Ravello collection based on Tuscan tile designs … but of course you can use anything you like in this striking but extremely simple quilt. A great intro to quilting for complete beginners - you’ll learn the basics of rotary cutting, putting your pieces together, and finishing your project

Crazy Patchwork Stocking (1-Day Workshop)

A great Christmas gift that you can make with any old scraps of fabric, embellishing to your heart’s content. This project will can be attempted by anyone who has done hand sewing before, from beginner to “old hand”. One things for sure - we don’t think you can make only one!

Fruit Punch (5-Week Course)

Manipulated Quilting (10-Week Course)
Tutor Liz Malarkey
Thurs afternoons 1-3 pm, 23 Sep - 2 Dec except 28 Oct (half term). Cost:£85
The title of this class in no way describes the beauty of this folded-work quilt. You’ll create a series of 3-D blocks to make into a throw or cot quilt (you can go bigger if you’re adventurous!). You can do this in traditional white or cream, or go for colours (Liz will be bringing her latest sample into the shop in September, which she's making with two contrasting plain colours). This has been a hugely popular class over the last couple of years, so we advise booking early!
Experience - basic quilting experience required, and some work will need to be done at home in between classes

Stocking Surprise (1-Day Workshop)

Sat 25 September, 10 am - 4 pm. Cost:£35 (incl lunch)
Thrill a little girl with a speedy Christmas stocking that comes with a special surprise - its own doll tucked in the top. Use loads of seasonal scraps to string-piece the stocking and dress the doll. This project is gorgeous - see pic on our website or in the shop! This Christmas stocking is quick enough to make one for everyone in the family, and you may want to make some more after today … but the doll tucked inside makes it a special gift for a little girl
Experience - general sewing skills. A little quilting experience is useful

Autumn Medallion Quilt (Beginners or Improvers) (6-Week Course)

Friday afternoons 1-3 pm, 1 Oct - 19 Nov except 22 & 29 Oct. Cost:£51
A truly beautiful heirloom quilt, with rich autumnal colours in Amanda’s original - but you could easily choose an entirely different theme if you preferred, changing the oak leaf appliques to a different motif. The class is offered to complete beginners, but we highly recommend this to existing quilters too, as there are heaps of different techniques on offer here - traditional piecing, foundation piecing, different appliqué methods etc - and we’ve no doubt you’ll benefit enormously from Amanda’s wealth of skills and experience.
Experience - all levels, including complete beginners
Materials - list provided on booking. This quilt is entirely hand-sewn, although you're welcome to machine some of it if you prefer
Sampler Quilt (Beginners or Improvers) (10-Week Course)

Monday mornings 10 am - 12 noon, 4 Oct - 13 Dec except 25 Oct (half term). Cost:£85
Another lovely heirloom quilt, covering lots of different techniques, with machine and foundation-pieced blocks beautifully set off by hand quilting, as you can see by the photo, where it is made up as a lovely child’s quilt (note the photo is of the not-quite-finished quilt!! A quilt that offers heaps of learning possibilities for existing quilters as well as beginners, an heirloom quilt.
Experience - all levels, including complete beginners. Existing quilters may also benefit hugely from this class as it's full of techniques to learn!
Materials - list provided on booking. Sewing machine for speed but not absolutely essential. Lots of hand quilting!

African Rhythms (1-Day Workshop)
Tutor Gail Lawther
Wed 6 Oct, 10 am - 4 pm. Cost:£35 (incl lunch)
Strong African and tribal motifs dance across these two striking designs. Choose either Pointed Ovals or Triangles to stitch on the day, and take the other design away with for later. An ideal intro to stained glass patchwork. Gail has used the panels to make cushion-covers, but you could use them as panels for bags, or build them into larger quilts. These look great in African-style brown/yellow/gold batiks and prints, but as you can see from the alternatives on our web site or in the shop, they also look superb in bright prints - in fact they’ll work in just about any colour-scheme you fancy.

Pinwheel Blooms (4-Week Course)

Monday evenings 7-9 pm, 11 Oct - 8 Nov except 25 Oct (half term). Cost:£34
Just fun - a whirling swirling array of pinwheels with dramatic effect in bold colours, using a design by Stephanie Sims for Clothworks' Luna Blooms collection. A quick course to complete the pieced top for experienced quilters who are happy to finish off the layering and quilting at home.

Love Your Sewing Machine! (½-Day Workshop)
Tutor Jenny Le Crossette
Wed 13 Oct, 10 am - 1 pm, Cost:£18
Frustrated by loopy stitches? Terrified of fiddling with the tension button? Daunted by the array of feet that came with your machine? This workshop is for you! Expert Jenny will help you to truly love your machine! You’ll learn to set tensions for different stitches to get a perfect finish, what needle and foot to use for different tasks, troubleshoot problems and much more. An invaluable session for quilters and other stitchers.
Experience - none required
Materials - own sewing machine (with the manual if you still have it!) together with any attachments, threaded with polyester (’sew-all’ thread), notepad and pen. We’ll provide fabric for you. NB You must check your machine is in good working order before the day (check it out with a simple straight stitch)
Quilting On The Go (2-Day Workshop)

Sat 16 Oct and Sat 27 Nov, 10 am - 4 pm. Cost:£65 (incl lunch on both days)
Join this lovely lady and talented author of her book ‘Quilting On The Go’ to learn this technique first-hand. Learn to sew and quilt your quilts in small manageable sections so that you don’t have to struggle with basting and quilting a whole quilt. The small sections are not only more manageable but are also portable so are great for take-along work. Some lovely design choices too, which Carolyn will talk you through.
Experience - basic patchwork/quilting experience

Cupcake Extravaganza! (2-Day Workshop)

A riot of fun with this trio of cup cake beauties - wallhanging (or you could make this into a cushion), bunting and little trio of hanging cupcakes. You’ll learn all the techniques for machine appliqué, and embellish to your heart’s content. A delightful workshop with a lovely lady!

Not So Much A Cushion … As A Work of Art! (1-Day Workshop)

Sat 30 Oct, 10 am - 4 pm. Cost:£35 (inc lunch)
Create a work of art in this simple-to-make patchwork cushion of simple strips arranged around a central ‘conversation piece’ motif-style fabric. The style is yours to choose - funky, arty, classical, country, oriental, Christmas … anything to suit your décor or to make as a gift. You’ll make the complete cushion on the day, including backing. This is a great ‘taster’ project if you’re thinking about trying out patchwork and quilting.

Utterly Charming! Quilted Tote Bag (3-Week Course)

Love Your Sewing Machine Even More! (½-Day Workshop)

Wed 10 Nov, 10 am - 1 pm, Cost:£18
Jenny's taking you a step further by popular request, with more tips and techniques to get the most out of your sewing machine. Today’s session will cover several techniques, including inserting a zip (great for patchwork cushions etc), and you’ll make a little bag during the class to take home, incorporating the zip and other techniques.
Experience - familiarity with the basic stitches (straight and zig-zag on your machine

Christmas Treasures ... 3 Projects! (1-Day Workshop)

Get ready for Christmas with these delightful projects to decorate your home or give away as prezzies! Amanda is offering three different designs - a table runner, a Christmas tree advent calendar (ictured left) and hanging hearts, with the opportunity to learn techniques of log cabin, crazy patchwork and foundation piecing to boot! Choose one to do on the day, and take home the other patterns for later!

Heart and Soul Quilt (6-Weeck Course)

A lovely quilt with lots of design possibilities (see various pics below), based on an original design by Red Rooster using their Heart & Soul fabric collection.

Snowflake Quilt/Throw (1-Day Workshop)

Sat 20 Nov, 10 am - 4 pm. Cost £35 (incl lunch)
This delightful quilt is really quick to make, perfect for Christmas decorating (great as a sofa throw) or as a last-minute gift. Great in winter colours and, because it’s such a forgiving pattern, suitable for flannels for increased cuddle factor. It is rotary cut and machine sewn, and uses fusible web appliqué techniques. The quilt is approx. 52½“ x 62” when finished.
Experience - suitable for beginners, but rotary cutting required, so if you’ve not done this before, please contact us in advance of the class to arrange a 10-15 min introductory session to learn this technique (£2.50 donation to Tear Fund requested for the privilege!)

Stained Glass Rose Windows (1-Day Workshop)

Amazing stained-glass window effect using easy techniques. Two striking designs created by Gail’s Mum! You can choose one of the designs on the day and take home the other patterns to do later. Gail’s classes are immensely popular and this is definitely one to book on quickly before all the places go!

Snowman Cushion/Wallhanging (1-Day Workshop)

Sat 4 Dec, 10 am - 4 pm. Cost £35 (incl lunch)
Get ready for Christmas with this gorgeous snowman cushion, or alternatively make it into a wall hanging for the home or as a lovely Christmas gift. Both patterns given on the day. We will machine appliqué the central panel and finish with a patchwork border. The, cushion or wall hanging can be machine or hand quilted and embellished with a little embroidery and buttons to give a real festive feel.

FOR CHILDREN
Little Mouse Pincushion (Half Term Workshop)

Thurs 28 Oct, 2 – 4.15 pm. Cost: £10.50 (or a total of £19 for 2 children from the same family)
A mouse pincushion with a twist in the tail! You can see our little mouse by the till in our shop, admired by many - and this will be your chance to make your very own!
Experience - children booked on this course MUST be able to thread a small sewing needle by themselves (with or without a needle-threader) and do a basic running stitch. Materials - all materials provided
Christmas Tree Wallhanging

Cost: £10.50 (or a total of £19 for 2 children from the same family)
Make a ‘raggedly’ Christmas tree using all sorts of oddments - fabric, wool, buttons, ribbons … you can be as imaginative as you like!
Experience - children booked on this course MUST be able to thread a small sewing needle by themselves (with or without a needle-threader) and do a basic running stitch.

After-School Club

Tuesday afternoons 3.30 - 4.30 pm, 14th Sep - 19th Oct
Cost: £2.50 per session
We are starting afresh this term as all our previous students are moving on to senior school. This term’s project will be an introduction to patchwork quilting, to make a small hanging or table cover.
Experience - children coming to the club MUST be able to thread a small sewing needle by themselves (with or without a needle-threader) and do a basic running stitch.
Materials - materials provided to complete the basics for the class, but children may have to buy additional materials themselves if they wish to take their creativity further!
